Thanks so much Dara for posting the very first song – ( Much Kudos to You 🙂 ( from Ali Farka Toure) and what a great blues song ( from the movie ‘Unfaithful’ ).
I didn’t know it before – this just shows all the music I can discover with your help (and I hope you find some of my song choices interesting) so please send me your music if you have a sec – no specs – anything goes – any style – any language – any artist (as you know I love music from Africa so if you can teach me more about musical styles on the African continent -I’d be grateful as well ). Of course it’s even better if it is your own song/lyrics – any musicians in the audience ? 🙂
You might be wondering why I came up with the music project thing.
Well I am used to starting projects – it’s just a good thing to do. Then this is also a way to explain more about all the things we do in the OpenCafe – how “open projects” start and are run and this might encourage you to start your own projects. Then … the music is actually an excuse – to just have fun, discuss things, and get closer to figuring out the meaning of life ….. or hm …. may be it’s not even important to explain at all – but these are some things I have come up with 🙂
Here is the first song suggestion from the new “Send a song page” sent by Dara, hope you like it:

Omou Sangare from Mali also, performed with Ali. You will like her song “Bi Furu”.. you can find that on imeem.com too if you can’t download it.

Ai Du Lyrics in English:
Trust and faith in your fellow man has no equal.
If you have experienced trust you will know its strength.
You must know yourself before you know others.

Could u please post back the Tracy Chapman and BB video

Ai du roughly means as “have of” but the true meaning might be lost, somewhere, in the translation.

What language is it?
September 2, 2010 at 9:38 am
I don’t know but most of his songs are in sonrhaï or peul (2 dialects from Mali, Ali Farka was fluent in 7 of those dialects).
I highly recommend everyone to go to Mali, the few months I spent there were like a dream, full of learnings about human being, reality, happiness and worth of life.

I first heard this song when I saw “Unfaithful.”
(What a movie!) The scene is incredibly sexy and I loved this song from the start. It really opened my eyes to a new genre of music!

The one and only Ali Farka Toure, what a musician? Malian music has such a distinct sound from other regions of Africa. Until I researched this artist, I didn’t realize the blues element of his music. A nice music pleasure.

‘Ai Du’ is sung in Songhai. (Google it)
‘Soukora’ and ‘Diaraby’ are sung in Bambara.
‘Amandrai’ is sung in Tamasheck, a Tuareg language.
These languages are not related to one another.
Ali Farka Touré really knew a lot of diverse languages, or enough of them to sing in them.
Please don’t call these languages ‘dialects’ – that is considered a racist term implying that they aren’t real languages like Western ones.
